There seems to be a fascination surrounding ancient Greek monsters in the ancient world or at least of the unknown. A common theme among these monsters is that they are related to an ancient Greek god and usually one associated with water or the sea. These creatures are powerful, grotesque and something to be feared. Without these unusual beings the ancient Greek myths and legends of how brave Greek heroes were born would never have come to be. In these pages I will tell you about the most well known monsters and the Greek heroes associated with them in the ancientgreece world, their origins, and the myths they are associated with. The Cyclopes Some of the oldest ancient Greek monsters are the Cyclopes, or orbed-eyed. The most well known is Polyphemus for his part in preventing Odysseus from having a safe return home. Cerberus Cerberus was a huge and powerful three-headed dog. The Sphinx Monster with a woman's face, a lion's body and a bird's wings. The Gorgons The Gorgons are three sisters known for being ancient Greek monsters. The most famous one being Medusa. Harpies Two-winged creatures whose name means "snatchers". Minotaur A man-eating monster with the head of a bull. Nemean Lion A powerful monster killed by Hercules. Hydra A massive and poisonous serpent with nine heads. Scylla and Charybdis Two monsters who attack ships together.
