Ancient Greece Olympics
Even the ancient Greece Olympics were related to the gods, heroes, and mythology. The historical origins of the Ancient Olympic Games actually have to do with warfare. As the structure of warfare changed with the rise of the Hoplite army, there needed to be a new way for Greek men to display their athletic abilities and strength. The Games were held in Olympia, Greece, a sanctuary site for the Greek god Zeus, near the towns of Elis and Pisatis on the peninsula of the Peloponnes. The first written accounts of the Olympic Games date from 776 BC, although it is sure that these Games were not the first ones to be held. There were more games than just the Olympic Games we know about in modern times. There were also the Nemean and Pythian Games. We will explore all of this and more in the accompanying articles.
